Sidmouth Jacobs Ladder Cliff

Sidmouth: Jacobs Ladder Cliff

Sidmouth Jacobs Ladder Cliff Art Print is a limited edition print by West Country artist Lawrence Dyer.

Although it is relatively small, this red sandstone cliff at Sidmouth in Devon is very beautiful. Its crenellations, holes and hollows all add to the fascinating gnarly nature of its form. What’s more it has a raised walkway known as a ‘chine’ built along its base that enables visitors and locals alike to pass around its flanks from the promenade to Jacob’s Ladder Beach when the tide is in.

Once you are walking on the chine this relatively small cliff suddenly seems much bigger than you had imagined and fascinates further with its shored up sections and even secret doorways and openings at the promenade end.

At the far end, as you walk towards Jacob’s Ladder Beach there is a strange over-sized confectionary kiosk of very long standing built into the base of the cliff and clearly intended to serve giants at least twenty feet tall! Then, once you get around this and onto the beach at the far side, you are confronted by Jacob’s Ladder itself, a vast white-painted staircase of several flights that stands free of the cliff and in its grand dimensions must have been built by the giant himself who gets his ice cream from the Victorian kiosk described above!

You are purchasing an art print as a limited edition of only 195. This is printed onto archival paper and set in an offwhite mount. Each purchase is hand-signed and individually numbered by the artist..
