I love watching the sea surge between the rocks, back and forth, creating those lovely patterns of milky-white patches and rings. Almost like lace! And in a few moments they’re gone before another lot comes along and does its own variation on the design.

This scene is of the tide surging between the big rock outcrops right beside the sea pool at Bude, Cornwall. The sea pool fills with new water each high tide, but when the sea retreats the water is held there by the human-made wall that forms its seaward side. Great idea! I’m not sure how long it’s been there but maybe since the 1930s?
