Widemouth Bay Waves Overlapping

The rocks at Widemouth Bay cause waves to overlap each other.

‘Overlapping Waves At Widemouth Bay’ by Lawrence Dyer. This is a limited edition art print, hand-signed and numbered by the artist.

Widemouth Bay in North Cornwall is notable for its exciting and varied Atlantic waves. From sea-foam-saturated breakers to ideal surfing material to more gentle waves, Widemouth Bay sees them all, and often inside a few short days. The oil painting that this limited edition art print is of depicts waves overlapping and crossing each other, no doubt their path influenced by the innumerable submerged rocks that fill the bay at that end.

To make the painting that led to this print of Widemouth Bay I had to cross the slippery rocks and perch precariously on an outcrop while the tide came racing towards me. I have done this many times before and as the white surf surrounds you and races past on either side it is quite giddying and you have to concentrate to keep still and not lose your balance. I cannot recommend this practise, however, as recently I attempted this in the wrong shoes and a wave swept me off a big rock and I bruised my back. Maybe I’m getting too old?

It’s perhaps worth pointing out that a piece of art like this cannot be created in situ as I would when painting a scene from the safety of the beach. Obviously my easel, paints and canvas would all be swept away! So a painting which leads to a print like this has to be made from a combination of photographs and memory, plus a little pinch of imagination to bring the scene to life!

You are buying a limited edition print of this painting, a high quality giclee print mounted in an off-white mount, ready for you to frame. The edition is limited to 195, each one hand-signed, titled and numbered by the artist.
